Too much or Too little

Rain that is.

Here in Dayton, there has been no rain since we left a week ago. The farmers are beginning to be concerned. Not overly concerned yet, but beginning to be. So we have started praying for rain.

Looking at the radar and looking at the sky tonight, it looks like some is coming, but it is pretty hit and miss. We were sitting on the porch swing in the back enjoying the cool breeze and Linda was thinking we needed to water the flower garden. I said that we didn’t. “Why not?” she asked. It’s going to rain, I said. “You’re crazy,” was her kind and encouraging reply. Within seconds there was the pitter patter of rain drops on the swing cover. I laughed, “See.” She still called me crazy … again.

It didn’t last very long, but I still think there is more to come.

It is odd for us, because over the last two days we have been inundated with rain. First, we were in a very big thunderstorm in Wichita that featured 80 mph straight line winds and two inches of rain. As we drove north we saw many ditches full of water and fields with newly formed ponds. Then a little later we saw dry fields and creeks and rivers that were almost dry. And as we approached Omaha Saturday night we were caught in multiple downpours that had drivers pulling over to the side of the road until they could see. I could see so we kept going. Then dry pavement and low river beds. Averaged out, we experienced a normal rainfall.

Yet it was anything but normal.

We were in awe last night. As we drove north on I-29 we watched the most spectacular sunset. It lasted almost an hour as we saw cloud bank after cloud bank change color and silhouette. We saw a strip of blue sky that contrasted marvelously with colors from deep crimson to fire orange to yellow green and deep purple. Every few minutes the color scheme would change and it would be either more wondrous or more subtle. Unfortunately I had stuck my camera in the trunk and we didn’t stop to get it out.
